SMiShing

SmiShing is a cybernetic felony using “social engineering” techniques with the use of text messages (as in Phishing) sent to mobile telephones of all service providers (Telcel, Movistar, Unefon, etc.).

The “social engineering” aspect refers to a defrauder seeking to take on the identity of one of the user’s contacts or of a trustworthy corporation (banks, department stores, etc.). The user will receive SMS messages with texts similar to the following: “We are confirming that you have been subscribed to XYZ service. For this service, you will be charged $20.00 per day, unless you cancel your subscription at the following address: www.XYZ.com”.
Once the website is accessed, the user will be deceived into downloading a program which is surely a Virus or a Trojan, which infects the computer and provides the defrauder total access to the equipment, exposing sensitive personal information. They may also request the purchase of cellular air time.

What should you do?

Ignore the message and delete it
Do not access any unfamiliar website
